Furious Savior!

I was privileged to attend a private Christian school from first through eighth grade.  We had religion class every morning and attended Chapel on Wednesdays.  We prayed, sang hymns and talked about Jesus often.  One thing that I remember are some of the paintings that were hung around various places in the school.  You know the ones, Jesus carrying a lamb, Jesus knocking on the door and Jesus with a bunch of kids around Him. (click links for pics)

These paintings are nice and they “paint” a picture of a loving, peaceful, welcoming Jesus who wants to lead us and embrace us.  I’m good with that!  I mean, He is a loving, peaceful, welcoming Savior…right?  But I also know that Jesus isn’t some little pushover.  Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ helped many of us to see a different kind of earthly Jesus, one who was strong, courageous, faithful, tortured and even nailed to the cross.  I heard many people sniffling, holding back tears in the movie theater as the screen helped them imagine what He really went through.

But there will a time when we won’t have to imagine what His first coming was like.  We won’t depend on paintings or movies or what some author has written.  One day, we will witness His Second Coming!  And the Jesus we see then will be a very different Jesus than the Jesus that showed up the first time!

11 Then I saw heaven opened, and there was a white horse. Its rider is called Faithful and True, and He judges and makes war in righteousness. 12 His eyes were like a fiery flame, and many crowns were on His head. He had a name written that no one knows except Himself. 13 He wore a robe stained with blood, and His name is the Word of God. 14 The armies that were in heaven followed Him on white horses, wearing pure white linen. 15 A sharp sword came from His mouth, so that He might strike the nations with it. He will shepherd them with an iron scepter. He will also trample the winepress of the fierce anger of God, the Almighty. 16 And He has a name written on His robe and on His thigh:

17 Then I saw an angel standing on the sun, and he cried out in a loud voice, saying to all the birds flying high overhead, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of commanders, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of their riders, and the flesh of everyone, both free and slave, small and great.”

19 Then I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and against His army. 20 But the beast was taken prisoner, and along with him the false prophet, who had performed the signs in his presence. He deceived those who accepted the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image with these signs. Both of them were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. 21 The rest were killed with the sword that came from the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh.

Revelations 19:11-21 (HCSB)

Jesus is coming back and He’s going to WAR!  He’s coming with the Army of Heaven.  He will have a sword!  Phrases like “the fierce anger of the Lord” are included in this passage.  Flesh eating birds are called to gather and they are “filled with their flesh.”  WOW!

We serve a mighty Lord!  He is furious, intense, passionate for His bride!

We can never match Jesus’ intensity and passion for us.  But can you say that you are furious, intense and passionate about your walk with the Lord?  There is nothing more important than your Christian walk.

In writing 2 Peter, the Apostle says…

10 But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed. 11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness 12 as you wait for and earnestly desire the coming of the day of God. The heavens will be on fire and be dissolved because of it, and the elements will melt with the heat. 13 But based on His promise, we wait for the new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness will dwell.

2 Peters 3:10-13 (HCSB)

Verse 11 is so cool, “It is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness and you wait for and earnestly desire the coming of the day of God.”

What does holiness and godliness mean to you?  What does “earnestly desire” mean to you?  Are these terms that you are familiar with?  Do you reflect and pray that you are living holy and godly in the presence of God?

The time is short.  Be on the lookout!  Take your walk with God seriously!  Look up because your redemption draws near!
