It Shook Me to the Core. Why I’m Rethinking Everything!

NOTE: Please take a  moment to read this article in its entirety.  I believe it is one of the more important articles I have written preparedness related.  It is not fear or doom porn to sell a big ticket item.  Instead, it could be considered a warning.

NOTE UPDATE: I’ve been sitting on this post for a while.  Although the material below is new to me, you can find plenty of info. about it on the internet.  But if I’m correct, it will seem like “new” info. to many out there.  In my research, I found an article that Chris Ray of Prepared Christian wrote back in January 1, 2014.  I missed it that day, probably because it was New Year’s Day and I was full of food or tired from staying up the night before.  But, I have linked to Chris’ article at the end of this post, as well as other resources you might want to look at.

I don’t freak out anymore!  I will admit, when I first started in preparedness, I saw the boogeyman behind every corner.  But I’ve come to find out that most people whose eyes are open to the condition of our economy, electrical grid, government, food supply, open borders, or just fill-in-the-blank, tend to freak out too.  As a result, when I talk to someone about preparedness, I try to reassure them and help them focus, work a plan and start on the basics: food, water, protection and getting out of debt.

I remember after I read One Second After.  I saw disaster all around.  My heart would start pumping and I expected an EMP at any moment.  I remember going to work, walking the halls of my school at that time and thinking, all these kids and their parents are unprepared.  They’ll all die!  I was in a daze.  But after a while, it wore off.  We didn’t experience an EMP and the world didn’t crash around us.

Since then, I’ve learned to base my thinking and preps on a possibility vs. probability scale, thanks to Jack Spirko of The Survival Podcast.  EMP’s are a possibility, but they are not very probable.  It is more probable to need your preps because you lost your job, have a medical situation or because of a natural disaster like a hurricane or ice storm.  So, since then, I’ve been plugging right along, reading articles and updating Prepper Website daily.

I do read a lot every evening.  I read and scan articles in many different categories including preparedness, homesteading, bushcraft, hunting, misc. (yes, I have a misc. section), alternative news and even conspiracies.  I’ve learned to pick out the good stuff and leave the rest.

Those last two categories are important here because there is a lot happening in our world.  Most of us know that there are plenty of things that don’t get reported that are important for the US population to know.  But there are websites devoted to sharing nothing but alternative news and conspiracies and you can easily get caught up in seeing little green men or big brother’s fingers under every rock.  And although I do post some of that stuff, I tend to focus more on preparedness, homesteading and living a frugal life.

My Views on Preparedness

As a result of all the reading that I do, I have formed my opinion about preparedness, way different than it was when I first started.  Like I said, I read a lot, but I tend to take a more practical approach.  I don’t think the mutant zombie hordes are coming.

When I’m considering the “big stuff,” I listen to Jack Spirko’s podcast and read authors like Fernando Aguirre, who has written two popular books (here and here), lived through the economic collapse in Argentina and eventually “bugged out” to Ireland.  What I always thought important is that Fernando believes that no one should leave the United States for another country.

The United States is a huge country with a ton of resources.  We have great farming land, a lot of fresh water, minerals and infrastructure to support it all.  Yes, there are problems in the US, but people still desire to immigrate here daily, by the thousands!

Like I said, I always agreed with Fernando.  But he’s not approaching this from a spiritual perspective!

My Views on Bible Prophecy

I consider my self a spiritual mutt.  I touched on the various denominations and churches I attended in Your Own Personal Worship Service.  I shared that when I was a kid, we attended a Seventh Day Adventist Church (I’m still bitter about Sat. morning cartoons – I can’t let it go!).  The Seventh Day Adventist Church is really BIG on Bible prophecy.  They tend to hold to the Historicst approach to interpretating The book of Revelation.  See – 4 Different Approaches to Revelations.

As a result of attending their church, we would go to their “Prophecy Conferences” and dad would even conduct Revelations Seminars/Bible studies for people who wanted to learn more.  I will admit, as a kid, it was interesting stuff.  My desire to learn more about Bible prophecy continued into my teens.  I would read stuff on the Illuminati, the New World Order, one world government, who people thought the anti-christ was going to be etc…  By the time I reached my late teens, early twenties, I was burned out.  I also accepted that every view/interpretation of Revelation had some merit.  I adopted the “I know enough of the different views and can identify what is happening if I need to” approach.  Again, see the “4 Different Approaches” post.

Everything Was Great

So everything was fine and dandy as I was plugging away at life, getting ready to garden, going to work and continuing my work with Prepper Website.  That is until I watched John Haller’s Prophecy Update for March 8, 2015.  In his video, John recommends John Price’s book, The End of America – The Role of Islam in the End Times and Biblical Warnings to Flee America Since John was recommending it, and it only cost $.99, I decided to pick it up.

Let me say here that I’m very careful about what I commit to read.  I get about 3-4 requests a week to do book reviews.  I turn them all down because I just don’t have the time to read them.  I want to guard the time I do have between work, family and working on Prepper Website.

Thank God that I was on Spring Break when I started reading this book!  I don’t know how I would have done it with my current work load and commitments.  Because once I started reading the book, I didn’t want to stop, even though I was getting that “freaked out” feeling that I did when I first read One Second After.

Why Are You Freaking Out Todd?

John Price examines the Biblical characteristics of the “Daughter of Babylon.”  Scripture presents 21 clues as to the identify of who the Daughter of Babylon is (other authors believe there are even more clues).  And although America is not named by name, it is really hard to look at the Biblical evidence and not identify it as such.

36 Therefore, this is what the Lord says:I am about to plead your case and take vengeance on your behalf; I will dry up her sea and make her fountain run dry.
37 Babylon will become a heap of rubble, a jackals’ den, a desolation and an object of scorn, without inhabitant.  38 They will roar together like young lions; they will growl like lion cubs. 39 While they are flushed with heat, I will serve them a feast, and I will make them drunk so that they revel.  Then they will fall asleep forever and never wake up.
This is the Lord’s declaration. 40 I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter,
like rams together with male goats.

41 How Sheshach has been captured, the praise of the whole earth seized.  What a horror Babylon has become among the nations!  42 The sea has risen over Babylon;
she is covered with its turbulent waves.  43 Her cities have become a desolation,
a dry and arid land, a land where no one lives, where no human being passes through.

44 I will punish Bel in Babylon. I will make him vomit what he swallowed. The nations will no longer stream to him; even Babylon’s wall will fall.

45 Come out from among her, My people!  Save your lives, each of you, from the Lord’s burning anger. 46 May you not become cowardly and fearful when the report is proclaimed in the land, for the report will come one year, and then another the next year.
There will be violence in the land with ruler against ruler. 47 Therefore, look, the days are coming when I will punish Babylon’s carved images. Her entire land will suffer shame,
and all her slain will lie fallen within her.  48 Heaven and earth and everything in them
will shout for joy over Babylon because the destroyers from the north will come against her. This is the Lord’s declaration.

49 Babylon must fall because of the slain of Israel, even as the slain of all the earth fell
because of Babylon.

50 You who have escaped the sword, go and do not stand still! Remember the Lord from far away, and let Jerusalem come to your mind.

Jeremiah 51:36-50 (HCSB)

Look at verse 45.  The Lord is telling His people to “Come out from among her.” This is repeated many other times too!

Later in verse 50 it says, “You who have escaped the sword, go and do not stand still!  Remember the Lord from far away, and let Jerusalem come to your mind.”

You also might want to read Revelation 18 in light of who Babylon or the Daughter of Babylon is – click here!

Jeremiah 51:29 says, “The earth quakes and trembles because the Lord’s intentions against Babylon stand: to make the land of Babylon an uninhabited desolation.”

A few Scriptures shouldn’t be enough to cause a freak out.  The freak out comes when you look at EVERYTHING that is involved.  This is something I’m not going to do here…because John has already written a whole book on it!

But these are some of the Scriptures why I’m shaken to my core.

My Changing Preparedness Views

Using the possibility vs. probability scale, I always believed that because my “eyes were open” and I was “plugged in,” that I would be able to identify the coming SHTF.  Barring a pandemic or our grid going down, I expected a slow gradual collapse, like many other experienced preppers.

And, even if there was a more sudden collapse, our plan was always to bugout to family property in the country.  The property is what James W. Rawles suggests, “down the side roads of the side roads of the side roads.”

But in light of what I have recently read, I’m starting to rethink all of my preparedness and what I should really focus on!

What does that mean?  All of this means is that I’ve started looking into Bible prophecy and my wife and I have had a new desire to pray and seek God more!  Don’t get me wrong, we have always done this, but we are taking it to a new level!

Let me also say that John Price’s book is one view of Eschatology.  In my search, I have found others that make a lot of sense too.  I’ll be sharing these here in the near future.

So to clarify, my preparedness views and those of any Bible believing Christian prepper has to be in line with Scripture and what God is doing.  As a result, the  Christian Prepper’s spiritual walk is the most important aspect of their preparedness!!!!  And, another related, topic is that it should be every Christian’s desire to study Biblical Eschatology and “know the signs.”

Conclusion

John Price has a few resources on his website.  There is a FREE study guide that accompanies his book.  You can go through it yourself, with your family or with a group.  There is also a document of selected verses referring to the Daughter of Babylon annotated in Greek and Hebrew.  There are also other resources at his website – End of America Book.

John has made his book available for $.99 so that people can easily afford it and so that more people read it.  There is a lot of scripture sited, as well as other resources that he uses from other Bible scholars and regular “in the news” information.  But warning – You might not be able to put it down.

End Times prophecy falls in line with what I felt the Lord telling me right before I started Prepper Website, to help people get prepared.

It also falls right in line with the Scripture that the Lord gave me to confirm my journey into preparedness, “Indeed, the Lord God does nothing without revealing His counsel to His servants the prophets.” Amos 3:7 (HCSB).  God always let His people know what was going to happen before it happened.  They just didn’t always listen!

p.s. – After sitting on this article for a while, I have learned that it is very hard for Christians to look at Biblical prophecy with “new eyes” or differently than what their pastor believes/teaches or how they were taught growing up.  I understand the gravity of this topic.  I would hope that you would prayerfully consider that America might be the “Daughter of Babylon” though and look at End Times prophecy with new eyes.  What are the implications if this is a warning and you didn’t heed it?  Remember, this is one view of Eschatology!  Don’t forget other linked resources below!

You have given the best advice you could give when you say we should prayerfully consider this interpretation, because my prayerful guidance is that these concerns are nothing to worry about.

I have believed that the US is babylon for quite a while. It just fits too well. We are so materialistic, hedonistic and two faced to the world that even if “we” are not babylon, we are certainly closely related

  3. Nely

Thank you. I will look into all of this. I have, for years, been telling my family about something like this, but have not been able to find it in the Bible.

But I too believe that the USA is in trouble from a Biblical stand point. You can see it is going down in every direction you look. It is a very scary feeling to have and to try to explain to people who don’t believe it because, well, it’s the USA…..

    Thanks again.

Very insightful article. It goes along with a real eye opener book “Harbinger” by Jonathan Cohan. It tell why America is falling and gives Biblical references for everything. I highly suggest you read this book. In his second book it talks about a possible famine in America.

As a Christian, we need to keep our perspective in the end times. We’ve been told to keep our lamps lit and wait in earnest for the bridegroom to return, but what does that mean in the end times? I have struggled for decades trying to be reasonably prepared, both corporeally and spiritually for what may come (btw, as Christians we should probably refrain from using the term SHTF, as the acronym is inappropriate language). I came to realize two things, first, there is only so much I can do to prepare for physical manifestation of catastrophic events. I simply have not the resources to deal with threats beyond a marginal magnitude. This is not to say there’s no point, but simply that I am a realist when it comes to my expectations of what can and can’t be accomplished. There is an incredibly small window where preps = survivability. Beyond that, survival depends more on God’s grace than my efforts. To that end, I determined that my best preps by far are to get and keep my spiritual affairs in order. Based on that objective, I can accept that whatever may happen in the physical, I know what the eventual outcome of my life will be regardless. While I am here, I will use the time I have to serve God as best I can. I will study, I will fellowship, I will worship, and I will witness. I will pay my tithe and be charitable. I will seek to be ready for when the time comes for the Lord to take me, no matter the form. Then, based on that perspective, I am not so worried about end times prophecy and “knowing” what may or may not be known. Our first priority as Christians is to have and maintain communion with God. If you truly follow the two commandments Jesus cited as the most important, all other things will fall into place, and your perspective on end times will be a healthy one. With that, we should all take great comfort.

Todd, There is a whole Catholic contingency out here preparing spiritually – the two main websites to look at are markmallet.com/blog/ particularly the triumph part 1,2 and 3 and charliej373.wordpress.com Both these guys are watchmen for these times – read well and may God continue to lead you on your journey.

For this to apply to the USA we will have to have some very intense persecution of Christians here. There are some strong indications that this is what the forces of darkness are preparing for the children of light in this country. It’s sort of hard to imagine happening here, but it is possible if things keep going the way they are.

    1. Benjammin

No one knows the time but the Father. What is certain is that these things shall come to pass, whether it is in our day or our childrens’ or beyond. There are signs, there have been signs before. Regardless of when or in what form these things come, the imperative is to build a strong relationship with God now. Any of us may face our end tomorrow, or it may not come for years, who can really say, except that the end will come for all of us? Whenever it may be, if you are walking in the light of salvation at the time, what do you have to fear? I am anxious for an end to the physical so I can get on with an eternity in paradise, but for that the Lord has purpose for me still here, so I will serve Him with a glad heart, and not fret about hard times that will come. Have faith, work for the Lord in earnest, and focus your attentions on what is truly important. I much prefer to preach hope than fear. If I have a message to deliver about God, it is one of redemption and peace, not doom.

I read the linked article as well as this one. Then i googled for rebuttals. Want to examine both the pros and cons.

Having done that, I believe that the interpretation hinges on whether Babylon refers to a city or a country. Prophetic Scripture is sufficiently ambiguous that it’s often hard to be definitively certain.

Regardless, America is under Judgment as well as it should be, and the fact that we have not yet suffered the consequences is more than enough to be thankful and grateful to God for His Grace and Mercy and His longsuffering.

Although I do not vote Dem, I know that we all will reap the Dem consequences.

Flee? I’m going to stay and share the Gospel and build up disciples.

    Pax.

America is not Babylon. All of these prophesies have been fulfilled a long time ago in a physical sense; the future fulfillment is meant in a figurative or spiritual way. This is not to say that anyone: A man, a family, or a country who offends God doesn’t have serious consequences coming.

  10. John

    Todd,
I came to this site and this article after reading your announcement about shutting down TPR. I’m intrigued by your decision.
I’ve been doing a great deal of rethinking myself in the past six months in the wake of the death of my best friend, who was like a father to me. One of the changes I’ve made recently is church attendance. My wife and I have started going to a church which I actually enjoy going to. I won’t go into more detail about that, except to say, I agree with the sentiments expressed in other comments regarding the importance of nurturing other believers and getting out the gospel in what must surely be our last days.
You mentioned other views of prophecy. I come from what’s known as the pretribulational, premillennial viewpoint. I don’t believe America is in prophecy. Babylon is a literal place. Scriptures about it pertain to a specific time or times. No one expected a nation called Israel to appear on maps within the past 100 years. Why should we not think Babylon will appear again in the future? This doesn’t mean America doesn’t have some of the characteristics attributed to Babylon, but America is not Babylon, nor the daughter of Babylon.
That said, as I look at world events, I’ve come to a conclusion spelled out in a blog post I wrote a few weeks back. Those in power are doing what they can to thwart prophecies in Scripture. The post is at https://eclecticpilgrim.wordpress.com/2015/04/12/how-to-keep-prophecy-from-coming-true/
On another note, recently I became acquainted with Chris Ray, and I interviewed him for my podcast. Details are at http://destinysurvival.com/2015/04/23/from-christians-and-preparedness-to-retreats-for-all-2/
Regardless of whether you and I might agree on all points, thanks for taking a stand according to how God is leading you. Stay sensitive to His Spirit.

My journey parallels yours a bit in that I read One Second After and supercharged my desire to prep. I’ve been listening to TheSurvivalPodcast.com since January, 2013, and find it to be very empowering.

We sold our under-water home in 2013 and have been full-time RVers since May-14 in search of a new home where the climate and culture are a good fit for us. Routinely loop back to the idea of expatriation, but I have yet to find any place that is safe and gun-tolerant for immigrants. Within the US it’s not so simple to find some place that isn’t subject to extreme weather or oppressive government.

So let’s get real here…if you didn’t want to be subjected to feet of snow, blistering summer heat, hurricanes, tornadoes, and you wanted to be able to own guns and not stress out about the safety of your wife and kids…where would you go?

…it appears that no place is “perfect” and any place that might be considered perfect is horribly expensive. I’m a web developer so I can go anywhere with a web connection. Where do you suggest?

    1. Todd Sepulveda Post author

      Sam,

I really like Texas. And, Texas is so big that there are a lot of different seasons and types of landscape that you can experience. However, where I am right now, if the Lord leads us somewhere else, that’s where I will go.

I would definitely pray about where you should settle down and make some contacts, from a preparedness perspective.

But you are right, no place is perfect…except in God’s will!

      Peace,
      Todd
