The Day and the Hour Are Uknown…But…

As I read alternative media articles on the economy, there are many out there that can’t believe that we haven’t had another crash yet.  I totally understand where they are coming from.  Nothing changed from 2008, but you wouldn’t know that the way the government and MSM report.  Many Americans seem to have short memories as others are watching for the shoe to drop.

This happens in the Christian community too!

I haven’t really been too big on Biblical Prophecy, but after doing some research and searching online, I’ve stumbled on a whole segment of the Christian community on the internet that is talking about all things prophecy.  Of course, you have to be careful.  And when I see people giving dates and stuff, well, that is a big turn-off for me.  But it did remind me of Mark 13:32-37.

“32 “Now concerning that day or hour no one knows—neither the angels in heaven nor the Son—except the Father. 33 Watch! Be alert! For you don’t know when the time is coming. 34 It is like a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his slaves, gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert. 35 Therefore be alert, since you don’t know when the master of the house is coming—whether in the evening or at midnight or at the crowing of the rooster or early in the morning. 36 Otherwise, he might come suddenly and find you sleeping. 37 And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert!” Mark 13:32-37 (HCSB)

How many Christians are really “watching” and “alert” for the Second Coming?  We won’t know the exact time and hour, but we can have our eyes open and looking!  We can watch!

I’m afraid that most Christians will be caught “sleeping” instead of watching and being alert.

To be Christians that are watching and alert…and not “sleeping” what does it take?

It takes more than going to church on Sunday morning.  It takes more than reading the popular Christian book of the time.  It takes more than sending some money to a good cause.  It takes more than “feeling” good about yourself. It takes more than sacrificing from time to time.  It takes more than…

It takes accepting Jesus Christ as your LORD and Savior, reorienting your whole life to live for God.  It takes allowing Him to be your first love.  It takes making your relationship with God your first priority above everything else.  It takes desiring to learn and grow in His knowledge.  It takes walking in faith and trusting when you don’t see the next step clearly.

The point is that when you focus on the things of God, you more easily see Him moving in your life and in the world.

And where the world is right now, is pretty scary curious from certain perspectives….

Spiritual – If you’ve read this far into the post, more than likely you are a believer who would agree that the state of the church is pretty jacked up.  We are weak and beaten down, at least here in America.  In many areas, the church has allowed sin to run rampant, not only in society, but in our pews without saying anything or pointing to God’s Word.  I’ll stop here since I posted a spiritual rant last week.

Israel/ The Middle East/ War – I’m not a student of Bible prophecy, but if you can’t tell that things are heating up over there, well, you’re not “watching” and “alert!”  But, the potential for turmoil has always been there.  But this time, the US is looking like it is NOT a friend to Israel.

I recently learned about a book called Eye to Eye: Facing the Consequences of Dividing Israel by William Koenig.  Koenig is a White House correspondent.  In his book, he details events where the US wasn’t friendly to Israel or tried to force Israel one way or the other and how soon after, some disaster befell America.  Yes, this happened under Democrat and Republican presidents.  Coincidence?  I’ll let you be the judge!

Economic – They don’t even try to hide it anymore.  By “they” I mean even mainstream economist.  The only thing up in the air is how long can they keep the boat afloat! When it goes down, there is going to be pain!  Pain like we haven’t seen here in America before!

Droughts – I don’t think there is enough concern coming from the state of California yet.  But we will soon feel the drought in our pockets when we go to buy fresh fruits and vegetables in the grocery stores and they are way more expensive than in the past because of the lack of water there!

I can go on, but I know you get the picture!  If there was ever a time to “watch” and “be alert” it is now!

Application

Don’t fall into the trap that everything is fine and be lulled to sleep!  Every Christian should do a spiritual checkup from time to time, a fruit inspection if you would…

  1. How much time do you spend “in the world” vs. “in His world?”
  2. Are you watching things on TV and the internet that a Christian should not be watching?
  3. Do your words and actions match your heart and mind?
  4. Are you spending more time with Christian friends vs worldly friends?
  5. In your free time, what do you do?
  6. When you consider the future, where do your thoughts take you?
  7. Are you reading the Bible?
  8. Do you fear the future or do you have faith?
  9. Consider, have you grown in your faith in the last year, 5 years, 10 years?
  10. How would your close friends describe you?  Does your faith even come up?
  11. Is church easy to skip out on or do you never miss church?
  12. Are you serving?

These are just questions to consider to help you evaluate where you are, they are not a formula for spiritual growth!

Prepper Application

I’ve said this before, as Christian preppers, we are not only considering all the craziness in the world, but we are looking at it from a spiritual perspective.  We are actually prepping for two scenarios, we are prepping for natural disasters, personal disasters and SHTF scenarios, but we are also prepping for the ultimate bug out – Heaven.  And that is worth watching and being alert for!

12Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand
or marked off the heavens with the span of his hand?
Who has gathered the dust of the earth in a measure
or weighed the mountains in a balance
and the hills in the scales?
13 Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord,
or who gave Him His counsel?
14 Who did He consult with?
Who gave Him understanding
and taught Him the paths of justice?
Who taught Him knowledge
and showed Him the way of understanding?
15 Look, the nations are like a drop in a bucket;
they are considered as a speck of dust in the scales;
He lifts up the islands like fine dust.
16 Lebanon is not enough for fuel,
or its animals enough for a burnt offering.
17 All the nations are as nothing before Him;
they are considered by Him
as nothingness and emptiness.

Isaiah 40:12-17 (HCSB)

Have you determined that God is your all?  If not, why not?

Peace,

Todd

Good recommendations for all believers, but what Christians can’t seem to understand is that we are a long long way from the return of Christ. People are thinking that the destruction of America will be tied to the return of Christ. Nothing could be further from the truth. The United States will be toast soon via one method of destruction or the other. I don’t have a clue by which one but we are going down. But this has nothing to do with the Second Coming except every day brings Him one sunrise closer than the last. This nonsense of a pretrib rapture is keeping countless believers from prepping also. They are insanely believing that God looks at us as something special and that he will step in and save us at the last minute. Again, just fantasy. We all need to take our eyes off of the fantasies and look to Christ only and stay faithful until our last heartbeat.

I would agree with you that Christians who believe in a pre-trib rapture don’t necessarily care about preparedness. I believe this is a mistake. Many of us don’t prep for “The End.”

I’m finding so much stuff on the internet regarding the various views of tribulation and rapture, timelines, etc… I can see why so many Christians check out of trying to come up with their own views. Each view has many variations etc….

And, what I’m also finding, is that it is very hard for people, once they learn a certain viewpoint or perspective of “The Last Days” to have an open mind that there interpretation might be incorrect or flawed in some way.

I hear someone say recently something like, pray for a pre-trib rapture, prepare for a post-trib rapture.

This Christian…I will continue to watch, be alert, pray AND prep.

      Peace,
      Todd

      Anona,
You seem to be conflating two things that are not one-in-the-same. There are a lot of folks who are ‘pre-trib’, and believe so based on Bible verses — not naive wishes to avoid discomfort. And there are clueless float-alongs who think God will not let them stub their toes. It’s a bit uncharitably dismissive to presume they are necessarily the same.

Someone could believe in a pre-trib rapture, and agree with you that America as a superpower could be ‘toast’ before the rise of the Anti-Christ. With that in mind, some pre-tribbers prep. They do not believe God will remove them before they experience any discomfort. That’s a naive ‘faith’ that does not require any particular eschatology.

Have you read any of Joel Rosenberg’s books. They are amazing. Look him up. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Thanks so much for your awesome articles. They have really encouraged me to get ready.
    God bless

Anona, with all do respects, you are wrong about the timing of Christs return.

Todd, getting interested in end time prophesy at a good time.

I have been interested in end time Prophesy for a long time, but I have a very good reason. I’m 73 now and when I was about 10 yrs old the Holy Spirit told me in a very profound way that I will be alive when Jesus returns. If you are interested in hearing about it I will tell the story in another post.

In Math 24 mark 13 and Luke 21, Jesus listed signs of the end times and said that the generation that sees these sings shall not pass away before he returns. meaning all of these signs will happen in one generation. Israel be coming a nation again was one of the sings. that happened in 1948, I was born in 1941, I am part of that generation.

Pre. trib, mid trib, post trib. I don’t know. I do know I will be alive when Jesus sets foot on the Mount of Olives. The 7 yr Trib could start any time after the restrainer is removed.

Good article Todd! I especially liked your application part. If more believers took that to heart, the church would be in a much better state than if currently finds itself.
The individual believer is who bears ultimate responsibility for what they do or do not do. Church leadership (in general) has failed the church and has been failing the church for decades. But its the individual believer (in general) that has failed too.
How many believers actually read their bibles these days?
Ive been to churches and congregations where people did not bring Bibles and the pastor did not even use one…

-Paul calls the Berean’s noble minded for searching the truth in the Scriptures Acts17:11

-2Tim.2:15, Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

-2John 10, If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house and do not give him a greeting.

How can anyone fulfill the above with out reading the Bible? With out regularly reading it?

Also, God did not give the Scriptures in English. How many believers take the time to learn Greek and Hebrew to know what the Bible really says? It makes a difference. Otherwise your studying a translation of God’s word instead of God’s word.

Loved your comment about every Christian doing a spiritual check up. This is exactly what we should all do. 2Corinthians 13:5.

Todd I do take issue your statement “I would agree with you that Christians who believe in a pre-trib rapture don’t necessarily care about preparedness.”
This is a gross assumption and over generalization. As a pastor and Bible teacher, I am pre mil and pre trib and very preparedness minded. Some of the most prepared people I know are pre trib also.
What ever ones eschatology, it all boils down to individual responsibility. As believers we should do all that we can do to the best that we can do, then leave the rest to God. The Bible tells up to be alert and knowledgeable. Not stick our head in the sand.

    Shalom

      Steven,

      Thanks for the feedback.

When I speak of pre-trib rapture Christians not being as preparedness minded, I’m speaking from my own observations and experiences. Most of the time I bring up the topic of preparedness with other Christians, the excuse of “Aren’t we all going to be raptured anyway?” is mentioned. Or, the other one I hear is, “God will provide.”

I do believe it boils down to taking care of what you can and God will do the rest. Actually, I’m reminded of a song by one of my favorite Christian artist, Keith Green… He’ll take care of the rest – https://youtu.be/gAe0q21YgTQ

      Peace,
      Todd

I tell people I am a Pan-tribulationalist, meaning its all going to pan out the way He intends for it to.

But seriously I think if we spent as much time trying to live the way of Jesus, you know devoted to His teaching, fellowship, baptism, prayer andcdoing what he told us…making disciples, guided by His Spirit then you will know what to do, where to go.

Its like me with my kids I say come on kids we are going somewhere and it might take us a bit to get there but its gonna be good. They don’t need to know where we are going I told them it will be good, they don’t need to worry about food, I provide that, they are safe as long as they stay close to me, they keep following me, sometimes we try to make it more complicated than He does.

Follow Him, know His voice….the rest pans out…
